Martial Arts Training
One aspect of maintaining a healthy mind and body is regular exercise.
The Center for Traditional Asian Health currently provides instruction
in several different martial arts, all taught by experts in the field.
Balintawak Filipino Stick Fighting
Balintawak, also known as Balintawak Eskrima or Balintawak Arnis, is a style of Flipino Martial Art developed by Venancio “Anciong” Bacon. It is named after the Balintawak Self Defense Club in Cebu City, Philippines, where it was originally taught. The club took its name from the street of its location, Balintawak Street, where the original Balintawak masters trained.
Although small in stature, Anciong Bacon was feared for his unique style of stick fighting. He developed his techniques with the utmost economy of motion and void of any fancy ineffective moves. Balintawak Eskrima’s techniques are practiced with precision and accuracy with its direct approach and explosive application to stick fighting. It is more regarded as a Combat Art.

Pressure Point Self-Defense
The art of pressure point self-defense is called kyusho-jitsu, which literally means “one second technique.” The training focuses on attacking the nerves rather than joints, tissue, or bone. Without great technique and mechanical advantage an attack on a stronger opponent will fail, but by attacking the nerves you can bypass and even negate an opponent’s strength, kind of like pressing an off switch to their muscles. This creates enough dysfunction to incapacitate or even knock out a larger and stronger attacker, literally within one second.
Please note that while pressure point training is safe and actually quite healthy, it causes some discomfort. Pressure points are subtle and require some contact to know if you’ve targeted them correctly. Pressure points are not extensively trained in regular martial arts lessons but are taught in detail in special weekly classes open to all students and martial artists regardless of style or school affiliation.

Taiji, Tai Chi
Tai chi or Taiji is a type of internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity. As a consequence, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of Taiji training forms are especially known for being practiced at what most people categorize as slow movement.
